As media highlighted the crisis, we were inundated with offers to help. Collaboration between JDRF's Linda Popky, Carb DM's Tamar Sofer-Geri, and our own Lisa Katzki led to a fundraising effort on Carb DM's site, quickly raising funds for 1,000 FRIOs for Puerto Rico. Yankee All-Star Jorge Posada and Dr. Luis Perez of the Puerto Rico Diabetes Association facilitated transportation and distribution. Numerous established and new grassroots organizations nationwide also took similar actions. They also raised funds from hundreds of generous donors and sponsored FRIOs to be sent to Puerto Rico. The private sector also rose to the occasion. A healthcare company chartered a private plane and sent 1,000 FRIOs and other emergency supplies to its constituents in Puerto Rico. The international pharmaceutical company, Sanofi, sponsored 15,000 FRIOs - to be handed out to those in Puerto Rico who needed them! As services resumed, capitalism contributed, with a major distributor buying thousands of FRIOs for island pharmacies and new distributors emerging to meet the need. Being part of this solution was rewarding, underscoring the importance of emergency preparedness for those reliant on temperature-sensitive medications. If not now, when?
